Chemical protective suits used on tankers and specialised ships depend on intact suit material, seams, visor, gloves, boots, closures, valves, and breathing-apparatus interfaces. Damage can be difficult to see and may only appear during an inflation or leak test. Compliance and maker requirements

Protective equipment requirements may arise from SOLAS chapter II-2, the IBC or IGC Codes, flag instructions, the vessel’s safety-management system, cargo hazards, and maker manuals. Inspection frequency and test method vary by suit design and service. Annual testing is common for some gas-tight suits, while others use different intervals or require testing after use, repair, contamination, or prolonged storage. The maker’s instructions and vessel-specific statutory basis must be checked before attendance.

• Confirm maker, model, serial number, size, manufacture date, service history, and approved test method
• Inspect fabric, seams, visor, zip or closure, gloves, boots, cuffs, exhalation valves, connections, and storage condition
• Inflate and stabilise the suit, measure pressure decay or leakage, and test valves using calibrated equipment
• Complete maker-permitted patch, seal, glove, valve, or component work and repeat the test
• Issue an itemised report showing readings, defects, repairs, result, and next due date; quarantine failed suits

A test certificate confirms the recorded test condition, not universal suitability for every chemical exposure.
