Weekly and monthly shipboard checks, annual thorough examinations, and five-year operational tests with the specified maximum load are commonly required, with records retained onboard. Wire ropes are renewed according to the applicable rule, maker guidance, condition, and prescribed maximum period. Flag and class instructions should be checked before arranging the test.

Prepare the vessel and quotation

Provide the vessel, port, maker and model, arrangement drawing, safe working load, ladder dimensions, wire certificate and renewal date, last annual and five-year test reports, known defects, and flag or class instructions. Confirm berth-side clearance, local lifting and work permits, test-weight access, crew support, and whether the class surveyor will attend. A complete scope avoids delays and ensures the certificate identifies the exact appliance and test condition.

Testing and common questions

What load is used for the five-year test?

The approved arrangement, maker instructions, flag guidance, and MSC.1/Circ.1331-based procedure determine the test condition. The test generally represents the maximum operational load for the appliance and its intended use, but the exact distributed load and operating steps must be agreed before mobilisation. Do not infer a test load from ladder capacity alone.

When should accommodation ladder wires be renewed?

Condition criteria apply throughout service and a prescribed maximum period is commonly applied under the SOLAS maintenance guidance. Certificates, installation date, construction, corrosion, broken wires, diameter, lubrication, terminations, drums, and sheaves should all be reviewed. A visually acceptable wire may still be due by age, while a younger damaged wire may require immediate replacement.

Can water bags be used?

Water bags or distributed test weights may be suitable when the approved method protects steps, platforms, structure, and personnel and the berth can support filling and controlled discharge. The plan must address bag restraint, hose routing, deck loading, weather, exclusion zones, and emergency release. The attending competent person and surveyor should accept the arrangement beforehand.

What records should remain onboard?

Keep weekly and monthly inspection records, maintenance and repair reports, wire certificates, annual thorough-examination reports, five-year operational-test certificates, defect close-out evidence, and relevant maker instructions. Records should identify port and starboard appliances separately. Clear appliance identity and due dates reduce uncertainty during annual surveys and Port State Control inspections.
