ISO 4309 is widely used for crane-wire care and discard guidance, while SOLAS circulars, class rules, national lifting regulations, and maker instructions apply to specific appliances such as lifeboat falls and accommodation ladders. Calendar renewal limits may apply even when a rope appears serviceable. The exact criterion must be matched to the rope’s function.

• Identify construction, diameter, lay, grade, core, finish, minimum breaking load, length, and end terminations
• Inspect accessible rope and associated drums, sheaves, fleet angles, guards, sockets, shackles, and equalising arrangements
• Supply traceable rope with maker certificate and fabricate sockets, eyes, splices, or pressed terminations under an approved process
• Remove and install rope using a controlled reeving plan, correct tension, lubrication, and anti-rotation precautions
• Function test, proof test where required, update records, and provide installation and material certificates
