Fire Doors, Dampers and Structural Fire Protection Inspection Guide

Inspect fire doors, ventilation dampers, penetrations and structural fire protection as one integrated boundary system before surveys and port State control.

Structural fire protection limits the spread of heat, flame and smoke between ship spaces. Fire doors, ventilation dampers, insulation and cable or pipe penetrations must work together as an approved boundary. A door that closes does not compensate for a damaged penetration or missing insulation in the same division.

Start with the fire-control plan

Use approved fire-control and structural fire-protection drawings to identify A- and B-class divisions, door categories, damper locations, remote controls and insulation extent. Build an inspection list that links each physical item to its drawing reference and location.

Fire doors

Check certification markings, frame and leaf condition, hinges, latches, closers, hold-back devices, remote release, alarm interfaces and unobstructed swing. Doors should close and latch from their normal open position without wedges or unapproved hooks. Damaged seals, drilled panels and excessive gaps require technical evaluation.

Ventilation fire dampers

Inspect blades, shafts, linkages, fusible or powered actuators, position indicators and remote controls. Confirm access panels permit inspection and are restored correctly. Corrosion, paint, grease and distorted ducts can prevent closure even when the handle moves.

Penetrations and insulation

Cable, pipe and duct penetrations should match approved systems and remain complete after modifications. Look for temporary foam, unsealed spare openings, missing collars and unsupported services. Check insulation for removal, saturation, mechanical damage and unapproved patching, particularly after yard or electrical work.

Functional testing

Agree tests with the vessel to avoid disrupting ventilation, machinery or occupied spaces. Verify local and remote operation, indication and reset. Test door release groups and damper controls systematically and record failures by unique location. Restore the system and confirm normal ventilation and access afterward.

Common deficiencies

  • Fire doors lashed open or unable to latch.
  • Unapproved penetrations after cable installation.
  • Dampers seized, inaccessible or incorrectly indicated.
  • Missing insulation around repairs and foundations.
  • Defects recorded repeatedly without permanent closure.
  • Drawings no longer reflecting modifications.

Repair controls

Use approved materials and installation systems with traceable documentation. Structural fire-protection repairs may require class or flag approval and inspection by qualified personnel. Photographs should capture preparation and hidden stages, not only the finished surface.

Review fire doors, dampers and structural fire protection and submit plans, defect lists and schedule through the quotation form.
