Marine Foam Concentrate Analysis: Sampling and Acceptance Guide

Understand marine firefighting foam concentrate sampling, laboratory analysis, common failure modes and the records needed to support a defensible onboard assessment.

Fixed foam systems depend on concentrate that remains compatible with the proportioning equipment and capable of producing suitable firefighting foam. Storage age alone does not establish condition. Contamination, dilution, evaporation, incompatible mixing and poor storage can degrade performance even when the tank appears full.

Testing requirements vary by system, concentrate, flag, class and manufacturer. Confirm the required interval, parameters, laboratory acceptance and sampling procedure before drawing the sample.

Identify the concentrate correctly

Record manufacturer, product name, foam type, batch or lot, production date, approval reference, tank identification and quantity. Determine whether different deliveries or products have been mixed. A generic description such as “3% foam” is insufficient because concentrates with the same nominal induction rate may not be compatible.

Why representative sampling matters

A laboratory can only evaluate the sample received. Stratification, sludge, water ingress or local contamination may produce different results at different tank levels. Follow maker and class instructions for circulation, sampling depth, flushing and sample-container material. Label and seal containers immediately and maintain traceability from tank to laboratory.

Typical laboratory checks

Depending on the product and required standard, analysis may include appearance, density or specific gravity, pH, viscosity, sediment, expansion ratio, drainage time and fire-performance testing. Laboratories compare results with maker specifications, approval data and applicable guidance. Not every annual condition test includes a full fire test; the requested scope should be explicit.

Preparing the sample shipment

  • Obtain clean, compatible, leakproof containers of the required volume.
  • Record tank location, sampling point, date, time and sampler.
  • Avoid contamination from funnels, pumps or previously used bottles.
  • Protect samples from excessive heat, freezing and prolonged sunlight.
  • Confirm dangerous-goods or courier restrictions before the vessel sails.
  • Send chain-of-custody and product documentation with the sample.

Common reasons for unsatisfactory results

Water dilution, seawater contamination, incompatible top-up product, thermal ageing, microbial contamination, sludge and polymer separation can affect results. Sampling errors can mimic deterioration. When a result is unexpected, review sample integrity and tank history with the laboratory and manufacturer before deciding whether to resample or replace the charge.

What to do after a failed analysis

Notify the technical manager and determine whether flag, class or manufacturer involvement is required. Establish operational restrictions and compensating measures where necessary. Replacement planning must cover disposal, tank cleaning, compatibility with system components, approved concentrate supply, refilling, proportioner checks and any required functional or discharge test.

PFAS and product changes

Environmental restrictions on fluorinated firefighting foams are evolving across jurisdictions. Do not substitute a fluorine-free or different concentrate without confirming system compatibility, approvals, proportioning performance and transition procedures. Residual old concentrate can affect both performance and disposal classification.

Arrange sampling and analysis

Use the foam concentrate analysis guide and submit product, tank and port details through the quotation form. Plan adequate time for sample transport and laboratory reporting rather than treating attendance as complete when the bottle leaves the vessel.
